Virtual Gait Analysis Instructions

Welcome to the mvmt·ology Virtual Gait Analysis! You’ve made a great decision for your overall movement health. This analysis will help you better understand your running form and identify any issues that may impact your performance or comfort. Whether you're dealing with pain, recovering from an injury, or aiming to enhance your running efficiency, our virtual gait analysis will provide valuable insights. We’ll assess key aspects of your gait to uncover any imbalances or inefficiencies, guiding you toward improved movement and overall health. We're excited to help you optimize your stride!

What You’ll Need

  1. Treadmill: Make sure you have enough room to film yourself from the side and back.

  2. Running Clothes: Shorts that don’t cover your knees and sports bra/shirtless preferred. If you wear a shirt, have it be a contrasting color to your shorts and tuck it in!

  3. Running Shoes: Wear the running shoes you wear most of the time.

  4. Camera: Slow motion capture preferred - iPhone or Android work great!

  5. Tripod or friend: To hold the camera steady!

Filming Information

Be sure to read through the following instructions once before you hop on the treadmill!

Filming Set-Up: Capture four slow motion videos of yourself running for approximately 15 seconds (too long a video and the upload will be challenging!).

Tips for Filming

  1. Be sure that the camera is positioned to be at approximately hip height for the full body video and calf height for the lower body video, and angled to keep you centered in the frame. If the camera is too high or low or giving us anything but a straight on shot it can distort the angles of your joints, making it harder to do precise analysis.

  2. Try not to have too much extra space in the frame but don’t zoom in so much that your body (or feet to knees in the case of videos 2 and 4!) goes out of frame during part of your stride.

Running Pace

Treadmill speed should be at a pace that is slightly challenging. A good guideline for current runners is your 5k pace. If you’re not sure what that is, run at a pace that is normal and comfortable for you! Be sure all videos are taken running at the same speed and jot it down for later!

Recording

  1. Warm Up: Run for a few minutes to warm up and get comfortable on the treadmill.

  2. Settle Into Your Pace: See notes on running pace above. Run for at least 1 minute at this pace before filming.

  3. Film: Have a friend record the 4 videos listed above OR hop on/off the treadmill to adjust the camera for each shot.

Submit the Videos

  1. Check Footage: Review your videos to ensure clarity and focus. Be sure that your video is approximately 15 seconds of you running at your desired pace (and not setting up or warming up). For a how-to guide on trimming videos, check out this link for iPhone and this link for Android.

  2. Upload Videos: Upload your videos to the shared Google Drive folder.

  3. Complete form: Complete the gait analysis intake form. This helps us tailor our assessment to your specific needs.
